FLOWERS: STYLE, STIGMA AND STAMEN The biological function of a flower is to mediate the union of male sperm with female ovum in order to produce seeds. When, for the first time, I pointed my close up lens to the heart of a flower, I was mystified. The delicate corolla of the bloom was exposing a blatant spectacle of sexuality. The stigma and the anthers were calling to sex with the brutal persuasion of Mapplethorpe. The demure and sensual flowers were lecherous doxies. Our censors did not spend time looking in the hearts of flowers otherwise they would have declared obscene all our botanical gardens! The appetite of nature has nothing demure… It is blatant, sensual, inspiring and exhilarating. I have so much pleasure looking at its beauty.
